Shibori Rust Dyeing with Stencils

Shibori is a Japanese resist dyeing technique which produces patterns on fabric when it is bound, folded, twisted, compressed, stitched, clamped or knotted. Although Shibori is often associated with the famous style of fabric dyeing particular to Japan, its tradition has been practiced for centuries around the globe. In this workshop, we'll learn how to create one of kind surface design pieces using only heat, rusty objects such as nails, rubber bands and cotton fabric. Each participant will leave the workshop with fabric pieces suitable for collage, wearable art or wall hanging. All materials will be provided, but participants are encouraged to bring any small rusty objects (ie: screws, small pieces of metal, wire, etc) they may have for experimentation. TIP: Anything galvanized will not work.
