Russian Art of the Avant-Garde

The focus of this class is on the constellation of artists who constituted what is historically called "the Russian avant-garde," which covers circa 1890-1935. The course is synthetic and advances by examination of ideas and "isms" as well as by familiar names and masterpieces. Although certain individuals and concepts (such as futurism, Malevich and Suprematism, Rodchenko and Constructivism) remain central, the course seeks to be comprehensive and analyze avant-garde practices that go beyond visual arts, i.e. the avant-garde literature, cinema, dance as well as to place these regional artistic achievements within an international context.
