Carve Your Own Story with Spoon Carving for Beginners

If you’ve ever wanted to try your hand at woodcarving, Spoon Carving for Beginners is a great place to start. Offered through North Seattle College Continuing Education, this hands-on class teaches you the basics of wood selection, carving techniques, and traditional oil finishing while you create two projects: a simple kitchen spoon and a love spoon. No experience is required, just an interest in learning and making something with your hands.

Instructor Saman Shojaei is an artist and educator with years of experience in woodcarving, mixed media, and 3D art. He began creating in 2008 and has exhibited his work in Iran and the U.S. His classes reflect his passion for art as a form of connection and creativity.

“I love that Continuing Education brings together people of all backgrounds who are curious, motivated, and open to learning something new,” Saman says. “Teaching allows me to create a space where creativity, connection, and skill-building all come together.”

Throughout the course, you’ll learn essential carving techniques, how to prepare blanks, and how to finish your spoons using traditional methods. You’ll leave with two finished spoons and a foundation you can build on for future woodcarving projects.

Saman hopes his students walk away feeling inspired and confident. “Beyond learning a technique, I want them to feel connected to the creative process, finding calm, focus, and satisfaction in making something from start to finish.”

When he’s not teaching, Saman enjoys paddle boarding, camping, and picnicking, and lives by his own advice: Create with love, live with purpose.
