Instructor Spotlight: William Dougherty and the
North Seattle Community Orchestra

Continuing education classes bring people together around curiosity and shared interests. The North Seattle Community Orchestra is one of those spaces. Led by composer and educator William Dougherty, this continuing education class invites musicians from all backgrounds to gather, listen, and make music together.

William Dougherty is a composer, sound artist, and educator originally from Philadelphia. His work centers on listening as a creative and social act. He approaches music-making as a way to practice attention, care, and empathy while exploring how sound can connect people and spark new ideas.

As a teacher, William has worked with students of all ages and experience levels. Some are beginners trying an instrument for the first time. Others are experienced musicians returning after years away. His teaching style encourages curiosity, collaboration, and experimentation. Students explore improvisation, composition, and ensemble playing while building confidence and creative awareness.

William also serves as Assistant Professor of Music Composition at the University of Washington. His music has been performed internationally and recognized with honors including the Luciano Berio Rome Prize from the American Academy in Rome.

In the North Seattle Community Orchestra, that same spirit of curiosity carries into the rehearsal room. The ensemble welcomes musicians of all skill levels and backgrounds. Participants explore an eclectic mix of music, from lesser-known works of the past to experimental and contemporary pieces. The orchestra also works with graphic and text-based scores that make participation accessible for players with different levels of musical training.

Rehearsals take place every other Saturday at North Seattle College through the continuing education program. The focus is on shared creativity, learning together, and the simple joy of making music as a community.

The North Seattle Community Orchestra runs April 11 through June 20, 2026, meeting from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm in the LB Building at North Seattle College.

If you have been thinking about returning to music or joining a community ensemble, this continuing education class offers a welcoming place to start. Register early!
