Flying Saucer Cinema -Spring
This classic science fiction film appreciation class showcases beloved films that cry out for viewing in a group setting the way they were first presented to the world. Each week will bring something new, films ranging from Golden Age sci-fi of the 1950s and 60s to the dystopian science fiction of the 1970s and occasional forays beyond. Co-hosts Eric Cohen and Mark Daniels will be your guides and provide you with film information, trivia, and lively post-screening discussion every week. We begin Spring Quarter with the 1953 classic The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms, an early atomic monster flick about a giant dinosaur which is awakened from the ocean depths by an A bomb test to wreak havoc in New York City. Then a group of scientists creates a time portal to visit the far future in the 1964 John Hoyt gem The Time Travelers. Mixing things up a bit, our third film, Matango, aka Attack of the Mushroom People (dir. Ishirô Honda (Godzilla)), is the bizarro, nightmarish tale of a ship-wrecked band on a South Pacific Island covered with a deadly fungus that has it out for hungry castaways. We wrap up on a happy note, pushing the boundaries of science fiction with the 1973 Woody Allen comedy hit Sleeper about a nebbishy store owner frozen for two hundred years and revived to lead the fight against an oppressive government. Whether you are a seasoned science fiction film buff or simply want to put your head in a different place for a couple of hours every week, this will be an engaging, fun adventure of a class you won't want to miss.
