Folktales Class

The Wisdom of Folktales with John Berks!

This fall, Continuing Education invites you to join The Wisdom of Folktales, a new class with instructor John Berks. Storytelling has always been a way to bring people together, and this course gives you the chance to experience that connection firsthand. Through live, drummed performances, John shares powerful folktales and then guides thoughtful conversations about their meaning using Jungian ideas.

The class meets on campus Saturdays from October 18 to November 8, from 1:00 to 2:30 pm. Over four weeks, you and your classmates will hear stories like Skeleton Woman from the Inuit tradition, Prince Lindworm from Scandinavia, The Handless Maiden from the Brothers Grimm, and Elk Dog from Native American tradition. No experience is required. Come with curiosity and a love of story, and you will be part of a shared space that values listening and reflection.

John’s own path to storytelling started in comparative literature, shifted into computers, and later grew from a deep interest in Carl Jung. His superpower is telling stories that stay with you long after the telling ends. Outside of class, John plays jazz trumpet and believes in staying flexible—along with flossing.

In The Wisdom of Folktales, you won’t just hear timeless stories. You’ll experience them together, then explore what they might mean for you. It’s a chance to learn in community, where stories bring people closer and leave lasting impressions. Don't miss click here to enroll today!
