Beginning Ceramics
This beginning-level ceramics course introduces students to the fundamental techniques, materials, and processes of working with clay, with an emphasis on developing strong skills on the potter’s wheel and through hand-building. Students will build a foundation in wedging, centering, throwing, trimming, altering, assembling, and finishing ceramic forms while developing control, precision, and confidence. Through demonstrations, focused exercises, and individual projects, students will explore form, proportion, function, surface, and design. Students will also learn the fundamentals of glazing and firing, using experimentation and testing to develop an understanding of how materials and processes affect finished work. As technical skills develop, students will begin to explore their own creative interests and visual language. Sketching, iteration, experimentation, and group critique will encourage students to make intentional design decisions and develop a personal approach to working with clay.
The course emphasizes both craftsmanship and creative problem-solving, challenging students to practice, experiment, take risks, and learn from failure. No prior ceramics experience is required.
The first class is mandatory, as it covers essential studio safety procedures. Students who miss the first class will be dropped from the course and issued a 50% refund.
